Read Auto/Biography and Identity now online

Auto/Biography and Identity
By:Maggie B B. Gale,Vivien Gardner
Published on 2004 by Manchester University Press

This groundbreaking book shows how female performers have used autobiography and performance as both a means of expression and control of their private and public selves, the |face and the mask|. It looks at how actors, managers, writers and live artists have done this on the page and on the stage from the late eighteenth-century to the present day, testing the boundaries between gender, theatre and autobiographical form. This book facilitates connections--between texts and performances, past and present practitioners, professional and private selves, individuals and communities--all of which have in some way renegotiated identity through autobiography and the creative act.

Read Peter Brook now online

Peter Brook
By:Michael Kustow
Published on 2014-09-02 by St. Martin's Press

Peter Brook is one of the world's legendary theater directors. His productions are a byword for imagination, energy, and innovation. From his ground-breaking production of Marat/Sade, to his |white box| A Midsummer Night's Dream, to his monumental staging of The Mahabharata and beyond, Brook has always been the pioneer of what a director and a company of actors can conjure out of an empty stage. In this first authoritative biography, arising out of an association and friendship with Brook over forty years, Michael Kustow tells the fascinating and revealing story of a man whose life has been a never-ending quest. Born into a Russian émigré family in London, Brook has been fascinated by theater and film since childhood. He studied at Oxford, where he made a film of Laurence Sterne's A Sentimental Journey and was almost sent down during his turbulent undergraduate years. As a brilliant young man influenced by the theatrical visionary Gordon Craig, he turned his hand to Shakespeare, opera, new French drama, and mainstream comedy. Following Craig's philosophy, Brook began to search for a simplicity, harmony, and beauty that would incorporate all aspects of the stage production under the control of one person. He also began the lifelong search for authenticity on the stage, a search that led him around the world from London to New York, to his legendary Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris, to Broadway and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It was in Paris, in the 1970s, that he attempted to discover a universal language of theater with an international group of actors. This collaboration resulted in a series of visually spectacular and innovative shows including The Ik, The Conference of the Birds, and The Mahabharata. In his long and influential career, he worked with some of the world's greatest actors and writers including Glenda Jackson, Paul Scofield, John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier, Irene Worth, Jeanne Moreau, Peter Weiss, and Truman Capote. His films, such as Lord of the Flies, Moderato Cantabile, King Lear (with Paul Scofield), The Beggar's Opera, and the film of Marat/Sade moved the camera and the screen to borders they had not reached before. His book The Empty Space continues to be one of the classic works on theater and drama in the Western canon and his memoir, Threads of Time, gave us a glimpse into his personal development. In this biography, based on extensive interviews with Peter Brook and many of the actors, writers, producers, and directors he's worked with throughout his life, Michael Kustow goes to the heart of Brook's theater, his self-searching and his unceasing desire to produce work that redefines theater and life.

Read Television now online

Television
By:David Thomson
Published on 2017-03-23 by Thames & Hudson

In Television, David Thomson whom Michael Ondaatje has called the best writer on film in our time turns his attention to the ubiquitous small screen and delivers a history of its revolutionary transformation. In just a few years, this immobile piece of living room furniture in front of which viewers had to sit at appointed times in order to watch a finite number of channels has morphed into a glowing cloud of screens that supply near-endless content as and when we want it. Thomson notes that if you wanted to play everything that has been on all the channels of American television all the hours of every day, that playing would take 5,000 years, give or take a century or so. The stuff is growing at a demented pace, as if the wasteland, which was once a lofty put-down of television, is actually a rampant jungle. So instead of a strict chronology, Thomson has built 21 thematically organized chapters in which he turns his provocatively insightful and observant gaze to the 65-year-long television era. Television surveys a Boschian landscape, illuminated by that singular glow and peopled by everyone from Lucille Ball to Dennis Potter to Don Draper. It is a rip-roaring, unexpected, and perhaps most of all, deeply thought-provoking history of the medium that has defined us.

Read Woody Allen now online

Woody Allen
By:John BAXTER
Published on 2000-11-12 by Da Capo Press

For the first time, the full life story of the filmmaker laureate: a smart and entertaining deconstruction of Woody Allen's genius, celebrity, and art. Born Allen Konigsberg in the Bronx, the man who came to direct some of the most celebrated comedies in movie history - Annie Hall, Manhattan, Crimes and Misdemeanors - is revealed in all his neurotic complexities in this adroit study by John Baxter. The first biography since the tabloids headlined Allen's lurid breakup with Mia Farrow and his affair and subsequent marriage to her adopted daughter, Soon Yi, this illuminating chronicle of Allen's career - from his days writing jokes for Sid Caesar to his eventual fame as filmdom's quintessential New Yorker - details the often scandalous success that Allen has achieved as screenwriter, actor, and director. And Baxter's compelling saga never fails to uncover Allen's calculated construction of the Woody persona and how far the hapless, obsessive character on screen is from the actual man. |Intelligently points out the gap between the shambling on-screen character that Allen created and the successful, controlling artist.| - New York Times Book Review

Read The Press Gang now online

The Press Gang
By:Godfrey Cheshire,Matt Zoller Seitz,Armond White
Published on 2020-09-29 by Seven Stories Press

A dialogue about cinema's legacy and best directors through essays by three of the best long-form critics out there, collected from the legendary NYPress for the first time. Comprising of the kind of long-form criticism that is all too rare these days, the weekly film columns in the NYPress included polemics, reviews, interviews, festival reports and features. A far cry from what is often derisively termed the |consumer report| mode of criticism, Cheshire, Seitz and White were passionately engaged with the film culture of both their own time, and what had come before. They constituted three distinctly different voices: equally accomplished, yet notably individual, perspectives on cinema. Their distinctive tastes and approaches were often positioned in direct dialogue with each other, a constant critical conversation that frequently saw each writer directly challenging his colleagues. Dialogue is important in criticism, and here you can find a healthy example of it existing under one proverbial roof. This three-way dialogue between Cheshire, Seitz and White assesses the 1990s in cinema, along with pieces on New York's vibrant repertory scene that allow us to read the authors' takes on directors such as Hitchcock, Lean, Kubrick, Welles, Fassbinder and Bresson; as well as topics such as the legacy of Star Wars, film noir, early film projection in New York City, the New York Film Critics Circle, Sundance, the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and the emerging cinema of Iran and Taiwan.
